The Overton window – the political theory of the illusion of free speech, controlled debate within allowed parameters

The next time you see a Military Defence spokesman or someone like the Chief of Police at the demonstrations in Newport describing their operations as an example of how they are defending our Freedom of Speech, defending our democratic right of protest and all the rest of the TV soundbites and utter bollocks. Remember the following…
“Overton window”

The Overton window is a political theory that describes a narrow “window” the range of ideas the public will accept and which they are allowed to debate.
At any given moment there is a range of policies related to any particular “issue” that are considered politically acceptable (“in the window”),
and other policies that politicians seeking to gain or hold public office do not feel they can recommend without being considered too far outside the mainstream (“outside the window”).
Moving the “window” would make previously radical ideas seem reasonable.
All information that form discourse in the mainstream media is controlled within the Overton Window.

Living within a Western Capitalist society is a very special kind of delirium.
