Actor Michael Sheen came to our Action Group meeting on 22nd September

Michael Sheen @michaelsheen came to our UVAG meeting last night. We knew we were having a guest speaker but It was a complete surprise, only known about by our Treasurer, his wife and a select few others.

Michael asked some very pithy and poignant questions and really got stuck in.
Why was he there?
He’s doing a documentary about the Chartists and he was interested in our campaign to get our voice heard – and is drawing modern day parallels and all that…
I’m hoping the documentary will screen on the November 4th anniversary of the slaughter at John Frost Sq, Newport in 1839.

We had a good, lively discussion on the subjects of “democracy”, or more correctly, the lack of it!
He was on the money and he could also see where we (United Valleys Action Group) had been let down by the bureaucratic quagmire in the planning appeal process in Wales and also what we are trying to achieve. Michael also asked “what one change would we like to see to the political system”. It’s not every day I get to talk about the philosophical principles of Demarchy/Lotterocracy with a Hollywood superstar! But I take my chances where I get them – Demarchy is the rule by the randomly selected.
I made the point that our curse is the “career politician”, in a demarchy, politicians are randomly selected and limited to one term of 4 or 5 years, then can never stand for the same office again. Ever.

Michael Sheen has most recently been one of the main advocates for ‪#‎TheWalesWeWant‬ the Welsh government’s “conversation”, supposedly feeding into their Future Generations Bill?
There is a call for a mass day of action in Cardiff on October 11th in support of Frack Free Wales and like minded organisations.

We (UVAG) have been asked to join. It will be a great networking opportunity.

A well-made advertisement is designed to grab your attention and to remain in your memory long after you’ve left it behind, and that is exactly what many of these social causes need. Getting people to think and worry about various social and environmental issues (or even simply getting them to be aware of them) is important for raising public supporting and affecting meaningful changes. A few of these ads are, in fact, commercial ads, but it’s still nice that they champion socially or environmentally aware causes/products.

Just like with commercial advertisements, having just the facts is not enough. They are important, but the ad must also appeal to the observer’s emotions. Many studies have indicated that emotion can have a powerful effect on memory formation, ensuring that memories with emotion will last longer than those without.

According to “Father of Advertising” David Ogilvy, his contemporary, Howard Gossage, said that “advertising justifies its existence when used in the public interest—it is much too powerful a tool to use solely for commercial purposes.” We definitely agree, which is why we wanted to share this list of social cause advertisements with you!

Campaigners fighting to stop death of the valleys turn out for mocked-up ‘funeral’

Around 200 protesters headed to Caerphilly County Borough Council’s headquarters in a bid to stop plans to build an open cast coal mine.

A mocked-up funeral service was held by protesters who are demanding action to stop ‘the death of the valleys’.

Around 200 campaigners turned out for the ‘funeral’ at Caerphilly County Borough Council’s headquarters this afternoon.

They are aiming to stop plans to build an open cast coal mine at the top of the Rhymney Valley.

In October last year, Miller Argent (South Wales) Limited submitted plans to Caerphilly council for the proposed Nant Llesg Surface Mine scheme , located north of Fochriw and west of Rhymney.

Miller Argent says the project, which would see six to nine million tonnes of coal mined over a period of 17 years, will bring between 144 and 239 jobs to the area.

But the plans have been met with strong opposition , and 5,793 objection letters were presented to the council today by locals who are concerned about the environmental impact the mine would have, as well as the amount of coal dust and pollution it would create.

Neighbouring cosmetics firm Richards & Appleby, which employs 140 people, has also said it would have to move its manufacturing department if the mine was opened because of the pollution.

The campaigners marched around the council headquarters car park at Penallta House, in Ystrad Mynach.

They were led by a funeral bearer and vicar, with the Grim Reaper also following the coffin.

John Hughes, who lives 600 metres beneath the proposed site, was one of those taking part in the procession.

He said: “The plans would see the company digging a 185-metre hole which would lead to so much dust, noise and pollution.

“The council is always urging us to be green and talking about the benefits that has, but this mine would have the opposite affect on all of us.”

Ecologist Jim Davies has studied the impact the plans would have on local wildlife.

He said: “This mine would see the end of Rhas Las Pond, which is actually a key site for birds migrating from the Arctic down to Africa.

“It’s an odd thing but the conditions at the pond are perfect for passage waders such as Little Stints, which are very rare birds.

“We feel that you can’t mess with this as it harms the whole ecosystem and we shouldn’t risk that.”

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s decision on the application is imminent, but no official date has been set for a vote as yet.

There were Assembly members of Plaid, Tory and Liberal and Plaid Members of the European parliament. No Labour spokesmen were present.

Student activism was once a force to be reckoned with. It changed the world, visibly and profoundly. But today, in the face of genuine and widely felt grievances, students are impotent and apathetic. Universities are businesses, education is job training and a degree is a holiday.
